Upper Dublin, PA

About me

Upper Dublin is a wonderful place to live and raise children. We are setting standards for community living that others follow.  Upper Dublin is one of the most sustainable communities in the state. I am excited about our “green” activities here and see them as ways to reduce our costs of living and create new jobs.

I grew up on Conwell Drive, attended St. Alphonsus Elementary School and LaSalle College High School (1978). I went to college at LaSalle University (B.A. in Mathematics, 1982), Temple University (graduate studies in Mathematics), and Drexel University (M.S. in Mathematics, 1986 and PhD in Materials Science, 1988). I taught at Drexel University, North Carolina State University, and University of Ghent. I then moved back to Upper Dublin to raise my family and teach at Philadelphia University (formerly Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science).

I am  currently Professor of Transdisciplinary Studies at Philadelphia University. I am also Co-Director of the Engineering and Design Institute. In 2007 when I won the Philadelphia Sustainability Award for Education, I was thrilled to see Upper Dublin on the stage with me receiving the award for Communities.  I have been fortunate to receive several honors in my career, including:

  • Citation for Distinction, National Institute of Building Sciences, February 2012
  • Citizen of the Week,  Ambler Gazette, September, 2010.
  • Best Practices in Communication – Honorable Mention, (for EcoMan and The Skeptic podcast), Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, December 2009.
  • Excellence in Education Award, (for MS in Sustainable Design Program) United States Green Building Council, 2009
  • Excellence in Sustainability Education, Delaware Valley Green Building Council, 2007
  • Philadelphia Sustainability Award, Pennsylvania Environmental Council, 2007
  • Leadership in Sustainable Building, Pennsylvania Resources Council, 2004
  • Fiber Society Award for Distinguished Achievement in Basic or Applied Fiber Science, 2000
  • Commendation from Philadelphia School District – Career to School program, advising high school students in engineering curricula, 1998
  • Commendation from City of Philadelphia – role in FIRST Robot Development team with McNeil Consumer Products and Philadelphia School District, 1998
  • Outstanding Teacher of the Year, 1994, North Carolina State University

I am a co-host of an internet radio program and podcast called EcoMan and The Skeptic where we discuss topics related to green homes and buildings, interview national leaders and have some fun. It is available for free download through iTunes.   I am “The Skeptic” on this program, and I hasten to add that Skepticism does not mean denying!  Skepticism is about finding facts to support opinions, not just leaping to conclusions.

I am the band director at Philadelphia University and have my own jazz ensemble (ORN Jazz) that plays the occasional party, corporate affair, or  fund raiser.  I also play piano with the Monday Blues Jazz Orchestra.

Please write me with your thoughts and concerns.  I want to know more about your needs and wants.  My email address is .
