Upper Dublin school district to merge?

Governor Rendell is considering merging school districts in Pennsylvania to save money (see this article for example ). Upper Dublin is on the list of school districts to be merged.

On the one hand, saving money, especially these days, seems like a great idea. Lower taxes would be nice! Or the same taxes but with money spent more efficiently and effectively would also be nice.

On the other hand, is it good for the young people in our district? Right now we have a School Board that is elected from Upper Dublin residents by the Upper Dublin residents. The School Board has a responsibility and reporting requirement to our community. Arguably we as the electors have influence on what happens in the classroom and can direct our programs as we see fit.

Combining different communities together into a single school district would mean a School Board that has representation from the aggregate and would imply loss of local influence.

Not only that, but the study performed by Standard & Poor in 2006 suggested that the optimal school district size for cost efficiency is only around 2,500 – 3,000. Not the 5,000 that the governor is recommending.
